Olympic champion Anna Shcherbakova publicly voiced her support for Ilya Malinin during the 2024 World Championships, describing her watch as a live experience that she enjoyed without knowing the final results. Shcherbakova highlighted the quad axel as a standout moment, calling it amazing.
Malinin emerged on top in the men’s single skating discipline at the World Championships held in Montreal, Canada. Based on the combined scores from the two programs, he set a world record with 333.76 points. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama finished in second place with 309.65 points. The podium was rounded out by French skater Adam Xiao Him Fa, who earned 284.39 points.
During his program, Malinin landed six quadruple jumps. Prior to this championship, no skater in the sport had completed a quadruple axel in competition, marking a historic achievement in men’s figure skating.
Malinin has spent most of his life in the United States, where he grew up and received his education. His parents, Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, were competitive skaters who represented Uzbekistan in the USSR era and later competed internationally for Russia and other circuits.
The World Championship performance added another notable chapter to Malinin’s career, reinforcing his standing as a rising force in the sport and highlighting the ongoing evolution of men’s figure skating at the highest level.
