The year 2023 began with several notable moments for the team, including goals from its central midfielders that set the tone for the season ahead.

River has one of the most expansive and historic squads in Argentine football. To reach the ambitious goals laid out at the season’s start, the club relies on keeping most players in peak condition.

As matches accumulate and training intensifies, some players start to feel discomforts that can sideline them from the roster.

In this update, GOAL outlines which players are currently unavailable and the expected timelines for their return.

WHO ARE THE RIVER PLAYERS INJURED AND HOW LONG ARE THEY OUT?

Martín Demichelis began his tenure with several injuries in the squad during the preseason. Some players, like Nicolás De La Cruz and Paulo Díaz, have already recovered, while Emanuel Mammana’s case was managed, and two more serious injuries stood out: Matias Kranevitter, who suffered a broken ankle in the first preseason match, and Bruno Zuculini, who tore ligaments in his left knee.

In addition, Hector David Martinez joined the list. The defender never fully recovered from his injury, and on Sunday, February 19, he experienced a relapse of his right knee patellar tendinopathy. Medical staff determined that a further surgical procedure was the most prudent course of action given his clinical picture.

Yet there was positive news on February 28, when images showed Kranevitter intensifying his physical conditioning. In a video he shared on social media, his pace increased during jogging without pain, raising hope that he could touch the ball again within a few weeks for the first time since December 22, when he left the field after just eight minutes due to the ankle fracture. The club’s medical team aims for him to be ready to join the Libertadores group stage in the week of April 5.

Another player on the path to recovery is Matias Suarez. The striker has chronic synovitis in his right knee, a condition that kept him out of most of the preseason sessions. As a result, he has been training apart from the group. By March 1, there had been progress, and he joined the squad in limited fashion after an absence where he could only participate briefly in the manager’s first match against La Calera.

Here is a detailed list of the injured players currently in focus:
