The Youth Champions League for the 2022/2023 season will once again bring together the brightest young talents from across Europe.

In 2022/2023, the UEFA Youth League stands as the premier club-level youth academy competition on the continent. As is customary, the access routes are earned by performance: national youth champions can qualify through their country’s rankings, alongside the top professional clubs whose senior squads have secured places in the Champions League group stage.

Ranked teams, draws and format

Thirty-two clubs participate in the Champions League path, entering the group stage of the overall competition. They are joined by thirty-two youth champions from the strongest national associations whose senior teams have not yet qualified for the Champions League group stage. These teams compete in the national champions route. If a national youth champion’s senior team later qualifies for the Champions League group stage, the vacated place is filled by the next eligible national association’s youth champion.

The group stage mirrors the format of the senior competition. The group winners advance directly to the round of 16, while the runners-up move into the knockout playoff rounds. In the National Champions Path, teams face two rounds of home-and-away playoffs. The eight winners from the second round proceed to the main playoff stage.

The knockout phase features single-match fixtures, beginning with the playoffs. Here, the eight national champions host one of the eight runners-up from the Champions League route, creating a high-stakes progression to the round of 16. The eight victors then join the round-of-16 lineup in the Champions League frame. The semicubbles and the final are traditionally held at Colovray Stadium, UEFA’s headquarters, continuing a storied tradition.
