Pots in the 2023-2024 Champions League group stage: which clubs belong where and how the pot system works
The group stage draw for 2023-2024 occurs on August 31, 2023, at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. local time, a little later than typical group stage draws which often begin in the afternoon.
As in previous seasons, the group stage features four teams per group. Two rules shape the draw: clubs from the same country cannot face each other in the groups, and clubs from the same pot cannot be drawn together within a group.
The process begins with pulling teams from pot 1 to determine the seed in each group. After the initial seed placement, rules specify which teams can or cannot move into each group, while the remaining teams are drawn from the other three pots.
How the group draw drums are structured
The drums for the group stage are determined by the UEFA club coefficient rankings, which reflect European performance over the last five seasons. In pot 1 there is no coefficient criterion. The eight pot-1 teams include the current Champions League holder, the Europa League winner, and the champions from the top leagues in Europe (Spain, England, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands).
From pots 2 to 4, teams are ranked by their UEFA coefficient so that among the eight seeded teams, the strongest coefficients populate pot 2.

buckets and the draw rationale
The group stage draw drums are used to allocate teams into groups. Some clubs with a high UEFA coefficient may approach Pot 3 even if they have secured a knockout stage place, depending on results and seeding. The arrangement aims to balance strength across groups while preserving the geographic and competitive rules in place.
