Steam Games Come to Tesla’s In-Car Platform on 2022 Models

The latest update brings the Steam store directly into the firmware of the built-in infotainment system in the Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. This move, announced by Elon Musk, lets drivers and passengers access a growing library of PC games right from the car’s screen.

You can experience titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and thousands of other games with the car’s premium audio system and immersive display. The message from Musk underscored the idea that gaming can be a feature of modern driving experiences, not just a distraction but a new form of in-car entertainment.

However, this capability is limited to models released in 2022. Those versions come with high-end computing hardware designed for gaming: an AMD Ryzen processor, AMD discrete graphics based on the RDNA 2 architecture, and 16 GB of RAM. This hardware trio helps deliver smoother gameplay and faster rendering while on the move.

In addition to gaming, the update brings support for Apple Music and Zoom, along with enhancements to the light show mode for a more dazzling in-car atmosphere.

Tesla has also introduced its own 1 TB external solid-state drive, intended for downloading games from Steam or other large data sources. The SSD is described as built for longevity, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, shocks, and vehicle vibrations. The product is priced at 350 dollars, with a rough comparison around 22,000 rubles in certain markets. A nod to high-culture gaming is given through a live orchestra performance of the Hogwarts Legacy soundtrack, illustrating the broader potential of in-car entertainment.

These developments reflect a broader trend toward expanding the role of in-car tech beyond navigation and music, turning the vehicle into a connected multimedia space. Recent demonstrations and hands-on reviews emphasized the growing feasibility of gaming in vehicles, the sophistication of the on-board hardware, and the ongoing evolution of software ecosystems designed for automotive environments.

While the Steam integration marks a significant step, users should remain mindful of battery life, heat management, and safety considerations when running resource-intensive apps on the road. The ecosystem continues to evolve, with software updates expected to broaden compatibility and introduce new titles, features, and optimizations for owners in Canada and the United States. VG Times noted that the launch aligns with a broader push toward richer, more flexible in-car experiences that mix entertainment, productivity, and connectivity in a single platform.
