Three-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion Russian skier Yulia Chepalova spoke about her daughter Vaselina Rocheva, who took part in a 10 km ski mass start as part of the Student Spartakiad. During the event a catastrophic collapse occurred, claiming many lives and injuring several competitors who were rushed to medical facilities. Chepalova’s account has been highlighted by Match TV.

Chepalova recalled that her daughter was fortunate to be situated somewhere in the middle of the peloton rather than at the very front. As the skiers neared a challenging hill, a small gap formed. The athlete recounted the moment by sharing her child’s words: Vaselina told her mother that she was terrified to start because there was blood everywhere. Chepalova reflected that witnessing such scenes would have shaken her for days, underscoring the emotional toll of the incident.

The mass start occurred under difficult weather conditions and took place on March 8 in the village of Estosadok, located in the Krasnodar Territory. The harsh elements added complexity to a race already overshadowed by tragedy.

In the spring of 2022, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation FIS decided to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions through the end of the season. This decision was subsequently extended, meaning Russian competitors have been allowed to participate only in domestic events and local tournaments during the interim.

A coach who previously supported the stranded skiers offered perspective on the factors contributing to the success of athletes in the Spartakiad. The remarks shed light on training approaches, team dynamics, and the competitive environment that shaped performers during the event.
