Spain showcased its strength against Austria with a decisive 75-34 victory on the second day of Eurobasket 2025 qualifiers, closing 2023 on a high note. Paula Ginzo led the offense with 16 points, while captain Laura Gil added 14 as the team dominated in Tenerife.
Following a hard fought 65-70 win over Croatia in Split, Miguel Méndez’s squad delivered a strong performance at the Santiago Martín Pavilion against the least threatening opponent in the knockout stage. From the opening whistle, the Spanish side asserted control, signaling a memorable night in Tenerife. A 12-0 run set the tone as Sina denied a triple by Elke Hollerl. Austria briefly found rhythm near the end of the first period, but two baskets from Laura Gil and Nerea Hermosa extended the lead to 20-9.
The Spanish attack was fueled by Ginzo who reached 10 points in the first half, with Gil and Lola Pendande contributing seven apiece in the first 20 minutes. Spain closed the second quarter with sharp two point shooting near 70 percent, capitalizing on opponents’ mistakes for a 43-17 halftime advantage.
The momentum continued after halftime as the lead climbed to 33 points. Austria attempted to strike from long range, yet the home side stayed in control and moved the advantage to 58-25. In the final period both teams relaxed, culminating in a 75-34 final score. [Citation: Federation note]
