The Russian swimmer Sofia Spodarenko, who changed her sporting nationality to Kazakhstan in August, has publicly addressed allegations of treason on Instagram. Her post came after an official move involving Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, which was labeled extremist and banned in Russia. Spodarenko shared screenshots showing harsh comments aimed at her and replied with a response she framed as defiant and personal.
In the Instagram note, Spodarenko wrote that she had something better to kiss for the haters. She explained, in her own words, that she had been asked how she endured the hostility surrounding her transition. Her reply was simple yet pointed: she questioned what constitutes hate and noted that she had read the comments. She described having layers of resilience, saying she had enough armor to withstand the scrutiny that comes with big life changes.
The 25-year-old athlete hails from Ust-Kamenogorsk, a city in Kazakhstan. Earlier in her career, she became the Russian champion in the 50-meter butterfly in 2018, a feat that highlighted her early promise in sprint swimming.

The international federation opted not to dismiss the VFTU in the face of Ukraine’s calls for sanctions.
