Over a span of four and a half years in charge, the Argentina national team saw 92 players called up, with 75 taking part in matches. From Scaloni’s very first day as coach in August 2018, he stated that every Argentine footballer could earn a place in the squad if they could catch his eye. His tenure followed the disappointment of the 2018 World Cup, and it unfolded through 19 friendlies and 38 official matches in which no fewer than 75 players featured among the 92 who were summoned, a period that culminated in a historic World Cup triumph in Qatar.

Throughout his leadership, the coach introduced the long-sought renewal, building on the end of Brazil 2014’s second generation and forging a team that fostered an unprecedented sense of belonging for the national side. Lionel Messi remained the emblem, while new figures seized their chances, such as Rodrigo De Paul, Emiliano Martínez, Lautaro Martínez, and Leandro Paredes. Under Scaloni, the team reached key milestones: lifting Copa América 2021, winning the Finalissima, and finally asserting itself at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

In both the late-year double fixture window and the final rounds of qualification, the coach expanded his roster to include promising young players who were not initially intended as substitutes but could join the group. For the March window, the selections even featured 17- and 18-year-olds, some born abroad yet committed to representing light blue and white. The most recent debuts occurred in the match against Venezuela, with Luke Boyé earning his first cap, and, a couple of months before the World Cup, in the friendly against Honduras, Nehuén Pérez, Thiago Almada, and Enzo Fernández all debuted, with the latter ex-River player reaching 26 caps in Qatar.

The ongoing squad selection shows a deliberate, position-by-position approach, as Scaloni continues to assemble a cohesive unit piece by piece through persistent evaluation and invitation of talented footballers.
