Olympic champion Russian figure skater Roman Kostomarov and his wife Oksana Domnina shared a dance video on Telegram, showcasing a moment from their life together. The post featured the pair performing to the song Gray Night by the group Tender May. This track gained additional recognition because it was part of the soundtrack for the popular TV series A Boy’s Word: Blood on the Asphalt.
In the accompanying message, Kostomarov remarked that he and his relatives keep pace with the times, highlighting their connection to contemporary moments and shared experiences.
The video stands in stark contrast to the severe health crisis Kostomarov faced at the start of January 2023 following New Year performances at an outdoor show. Reports indicate he was admitted to intensive care with pneumonia and placed on a ventilator, and his condition was described as extremely serious. He was transferred to a hospital in Kommunarka where he was stabilized and connected to an artificial blood oxygen saturation device, commonly known as ECMO, remaining on ventilation for an extended period.
Complications from the illness led to serious developments, including gangrene, which required several amputations. Doctors performed multiple procedures resulting in the loss of both legs, as well as the loss of one hand and several fingers on the other hand. Kostomarov spent 175 days at the Kommunarka hospital before being discharged on July 6. This period marked a significant turning point in his medical journey and recovery process.
Earlier statements from Kostomarov indicated that he had continued driving, underscoring a determination to maintain independence despite the extensive medical challenges faced during this period. The news surrounding his condition drew extensive coverage and commentary from the sports community and fans worldwide, reflecting both concern and support for his ongoing rehabilitation and life after the illness.
