The idol has already landed in Argentina, and his plan is clear: return to the Millionaire, demand a release to wear the River Plate jersey again, and take on a special number that marks a new chapter.

During the second half of 2023, River faced a rough patch. After dominating the Professional League from start to finish, the club followed with early exits in the Argentine Cup and, most painful of all, in the Copa Libertadores. There was also an awkward start to the Professional League Cup. Yet one piece of news buoyed the fans in Núñez: the return of the disappointed champion, Martinez.

What the majority hoped would happen by the middle of the next year, with some even eyeing January, finally occurred in early August. The man who scored Madrid’s 3-1 draw against Boca chose to negotiate with Al Nassr about terminating his contract so he could finish his rehabilitation in Argentina and, most importantly, with River.

He underwent a medical examination on August 25, where his rehabilitation progress was assessed. A contract was then signed through December 2024, making his return possible after more than four years away from the club.

How is the rehabilitation progressing?

In February, Martínez suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee that required surgery in Spain. He then began a careful recovery, moving his training path through Argentina under the guidance of River’s physiotherapist Franco Bombicino.

A few weeks ago, de Pity traveled to Barcelona for talks with Ramón Cugat, a renowned specialist in the field. Although not officially discharged, the plan is for him and his medical team to begin on-field work at the start of September, aiming for a formal return to action by October.

WHAT NUMBER WILL BE WORN?

In this new era for the Millionaire, the idol will not be able to reclaim the number 10, a number recently given to Manuel Lanzini by Nacho Fernández.

On Saturday, August 26, a hint emerged on his Instagram story that his return matches another milestone: the 18th year River won the memorable Copa Libertadores in Madrid, leaving fans hopeful for a triumphant comeback.

All signs point toward a meticulously planned return, one that balances the player’s health with the club’s sporting needs. The saga of Martínez continues to unfold, and River supporters await the moment he steps back onto the pitch in a River shirt, carrying a number that resonates with the club’s recent history and the player’s personal journey.
