Oksana Domnina Shares Heartfelt Update on Roman Kostomarov’s Health Journey
Oksana Domnina, wife of the 2006 Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov, informed NTV that medical teams continue their efforts to prevent the amputation of his left arm and to secure the best possible outcome for his health.
In the latest update, it is noted that Kostomarov has left the hospital after stabilization, yet doctors remain actively involved in his recovery process. The family reports that the medical team decided on amputating the right arm early on, while they persist in trying to save the left arm, a testament to the ongoing battle for his mobility and strength.
The medical challenges began at the start of January 2023, when Kostomarov was admitted after participating in New Year performances at an open-air show. He faced a severe condition that led to intensive care admission, pneumonia, and the need for respiratory support.
He was transferred to a hospital in Kommunarka where he underwent resuscitation and was placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). During treatment, both his feet and hands required amputation as part of his life-saving care. By July, the medical team discharged the skater from the hospital, marking a significant step in his recovery arc.
After a period of recovery, Kostomarov made his return to the ice on August 22, performing at a show by Ilya Averbukh titled Love Letters held in Sochi. The appearance marked a notable moment in his path back toward public life and professional skating.
In related remarks, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who has held the world title in figure skating, offered a public acknowledgment of the evolving situation around Kostomarov and the broader implications for the sport and its athletes. The family and medical team continue to share updates as the situation develops, focusing on rehabilitation milestones and long-term quality of life for the skater.
