Oksana Domnina spoke on the Free Skating podcast about the moment her husband, Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov, was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and the uncertainty that followed.
She recalled how at first the situation seemed hopeful and manageable, only to reveal a far tougher path. The experience tested the entire family, demanding endurance, resilience, and a steady resolve to accept what unfolded day after day.
Even seasoned medical professionals admitted they faced a grave challenge. The doctors emphasized that Kostomarov’s strength and will mattered as much as any treatment. If the body could not respond, options would remain limited; yet his determination and athletic conditioning played a crucial role in keeping hope alive through the hardest moments.
In the early days of January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized after the New Year performances at an open-air show. Reports indicated intensive care, a ventilator was in use, and the prognosis was extremely serious. He subsequently received care at Kommunarka, and parts of his arms and legs were amputated. By early July 2023, the skater began a gradual discharge from the hospital to continue recovery at home.
Kostomarov earned Olympic glory in 2006 and later secured another gold in ice dancing partnering with Tatyana Navka, marking a high point in his competitive career.
Earlier remarks from CSKA goalkeeper Kostomarov have been shared, highlighting the profound impression his appearance on the ice leaves on fans and fellow athletes alike, underscoring the enduring respect for his contributions to the sport. [Citation: Free Skating podcast discussions]”
