Institutions like UCLA are home to respected programs where strong women’s teams compete at a high level, exemplified by storied programs within the MX circuit that feed into NCAA competition.
For many Mexican and Mexican American athletes, college soccer offers a pathway to balance education with sport while pursuing the NCAA College Cup title across multiple divisions that reflect the breadth of the program, including the Bruins who are among the prominent teams in Division I.
The 2022 NCAA College Cup Division I Final highlighted Mexican influence in American college soccer. Mexican American player Maricarmen Reyes, then with the team now known as the Amazons, scored a dramatic late goal to overturn a 3 2 deficit against North Carolina, securing the championship and ending a nine year drought without a national title.
