A youth squad from the women’s division of the Elche handball club earned a spot in the Mini Cup grand final this Sunday by dominating the group stage with three convincing wins. The Franjiverdes are chasing a major title they didn’t clinch earlier, having been edged by Bera Bera in the early rounds of the final stage.

The Handball Mini Cup takes place in the same city and on the same dates as the senior competition, with the same clubs taking part. On Friday, Franjiverdes defeated both of their rivals in a tight schedule: Costa del Sol Malaga ran up a 29-11 result, Grafometal Sporting La Rioja followed with a 23-14 score, and Saturday morning brought Motive.co Gijon to a 29-8 victory. Their string of wins secured top place in the group, which granted them entry to the cup final.
The grand final is scheduled for Sunday at 16:00, to be played at the Martín Carpena Sports Palace in Malaga. The two teams, including Atticgo CBM Elche Ferretería Industrial Carrús, will serve as the opening act for the overall Copa de la Reina final. What is a Mini Cup?
The Minicopa de la Reina is a women’s handball tournament designed for grassroots teams, run in parallel with the Copa de la Reina. The event began in 2017 with the aim of elevating grassroots women’s handball and giving aspiring players the chance to compete in a professional and highly competitive environment.
Participating teams from hopeful categories compete in short matches, each consisting of two 20-minute periods. The tournament format features a group stage followed by a final, with matches scheduled at venues that host the Copa de la Reina.
