Messi exits PSG after two seasons and will soon decide his plans for the upcoming campaign

Messi’s farewell to Paris Saint-Germain is now official. His status was publicly confirmed on Saturday, June 3, just before PSG faced Clermont, and shortly after Sergio Ramos’ departure was announced as well.

The Argentine superstar did not renew his contract with the French club, a move the club publicly acknowledged in a farewell statement praising him as “the greatest footballer of all time” and wishing him continued success in his sporting career.

Leo arrived in Paris in August 2021 and leaves with three trophy wins to his name, two Ligue 1 titles and one Super Cup. Yet, he departs with PSG still seeking the triumph in the UEFA Champions League that has eluded the club during his tenure.

Questions are already forming about what comes next for Messi. The big one is which club he will represent in the next season. In Barcelona, hope remains high and supporters insist the ball is in the player’s court.

However, the club’s financial constraints present a significant hurdle to any potential move that would bring Messi back to the Blaugrana immediately.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta met with Jorge Messi, the player’s father, on Monday, June 5, following Messi’s departure from PSG, in an effort to explore the possibility of a return to Barcelona for their star.

Messi’s father indicated he would be receptive to a Barca return after two seasons in Paris, but he acknowledged that many factors would influence any decision, suggesting that negotiations could be lengthy if they progress at all. “I don’t know anything,” said Jorge Messi.

Other options

Among the offers on the table, a move to Saudi Arabia stands out as the most lucrative and seemingly feasible at this stage.

Interest in the United States has cooled somewhat, even with Inter Miami’s renewed interest. L’Equipe reported that a deal between Messi and Barcelona could involve a loan arrangement that would see the forward stay with Barcelona on loan for a period of six to 18 months. The coming days are likely to bring clarity on the path Messi chooses.
