The world champion trained with Paris Saint-Germain again and was warmly welcomed by the entire club. The reasons for Mbappé’s absence are explained below.
Lionel Messi took part in PSG’s training sessions after a short break following his Qatar 2022 World Cup triumph with Argentina. The 30-year-old forward was greeted with applause by teammates who staged the traditional champions’ hallway and handed him a gold plaque in a symbolic ceremony honoring his achievement.
After lifting the World Cup trophy, the Argentine star spent Christmas and New Year with his family in Rosario and attended his niece’s fifteenth birthday celebration. On the night of January 2, he returned to Paris with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their children Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro.
WHEN WILL MESSI PLAY FOR PSG AGAIN?
Messi’s reception at PSG
PSG shared clips of Messi arriving at training on social media. The footage shows him reuniting with Neymar and exchanging greetings with teammates including Carlos Soler and Zaire-Emery. In another clip posted by the club, the hall of fame moment is captured as the players applaud La Pulga and the moment he is presented with a plaque congratulating him on the Qatar World Cup title.
Why was Mbappé not at Messi’s reception?
The French star, who came in second in the World Cup after delivering a hat-trick in the final, was absent along with Achraf Hakimi. After joining PSG and following their World Cup exit, head coach Christophe Galtier opted to grant them a few days off after the team’s defeat to Lens. The striker and the defender later traveled to New York to catch an NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets and the San Antonio Spurs.
Paris’s club remains atop Ligue 1, four points ahead of the next closest challenger.
