The Saudi government is reportedly prepared to pursue a contract with Lionel Messi, the renowned forward of Paris Saint-Germain and a veteran of the Argentina national team. The Telegraph has reported on the matter.

According to the publication, Messi, who is 35, could command a yearly salary of 400 million euros (about 320 million pounds) if he joins a club in Saudi Arabia’s top league. By comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo, another high-profile international star, earns around £165 million per year in the same market.

In the near term, it is said that representatives for the Saudi government will hold discussions with Messi’s father to explore possible terms and arrangements.

There has also been a disciplinary development connected to Messi following his trip to Saudi Arabia. A former PSG sporting director, Luis Campos, disclosed that an inquiry had been opened regarding Messi’s visit. The situation was detailed in media coverage on May 2, with RMC Sport noting that Messi was suspended for two weeks after travelling to Saudi Arabia during a PSG training period.

Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021, and his current deal with the club was reported to run through June 2023. Throughout the French league season, the footballer recorded 15 goals and 15 assists across 27 matches, highlighting his ongoing impact on the field.
