Defender Mario Fernandez has officially said farewell to Zenit St. Petersburg. A related video was shared by the blue-white-blue on social networks, marking his departure from the club.
The footballer, who has represented the Russian national team, addressed supporters in Portuguese, expressing gratitude and bidding farewell. He stated that he was leaving Zenit and extended thanks to the club, teammates, and the fans for their unwavering support, adding a warm hug and a blessing to everyone.
According to a July 23 report from RB Sports, Fernandez departed Zenit due to concerns about his physical condition not meeting the demands of his former level. The coaching staff reportedly felt that he would not be able to return to his previous form.
Zenit first introduced Mario Fernandez as a team member on July 7, 2023, with the parties agreeing to a contract under a 1+1 arrangement. During a March 23, 2024 training match against Red Star, Fernandez came on as a substitute at halftime, played 32 minutes, and then sustained an injury that forced him off the field.
The 33-year-old defender appeared in 18 matches across all competitions last season, without scoring a goal.
Earlier reports had indicated there were considerations in Russia about the possibility of canceling the player’s Fan ID, a measure sometimes used to regulate access to matches and certain activities. Such discussions, linked to Fernandez, were noted in various updates around his status with Zenit.
