Marcelino García Toral is now officially the head coach of the team, Villarreal. After the dismissal of José Rojo ‘Pacheta’ last Friday, the club announced the Asturian coach’s arrival this Sunday, with director of football Miguel Ángel Tena guiding Submarino against Atlético de Madrid. He is signed for the remainder of the season and for two additional campaigns, extending his contract through June 30, 2026.

The new tenant of the yellow side will be in action this Tuesday at 13:30 at the Seramik Stadium. Earlier, at 10:30 in the morning, his first session will be held at the José Manuel Llaneza Sports City, followed by a second workout on Tuesday at 18:00.

Undoubtedly, this transfer aligns with the team’s needs and is welcomed by the entire Roig family and the fanbase. Acknowledging the necessity for a shift in direction and a new momentum from the bench, there has been a push to improve both play and results for the Yellow team this season.

The Asturian coach arrives at Castellón alongside the rest of the technical staff. The backroom team includes Rubén Uría as deputy, Isma Fernández and Pablo Manzanet as physical trainers, and other assistants such as Sergio García and Bruno Uría.

Although his previous tenure ended in August 2016, the bond between the Roig family and the Asturian remained strong, with the relationship maturing over seven years and his profile consistently in view for the club’s leadership.

When was Marcelino unavailable? Quique Setién was dismissed (two weeks later the Villaviciosa coach left the field) at Olympique de Marseille, three months after a controversial incident, but once Villarreal found themselves coachless, Marcelino stepped in again and accepted the challenge.

Marcelino had long been the coach Villarreal fans desired. During his first tenure, he led the club through a successful period, returning to European competitions and securing top finishes. Under Fernando Roig, the club enjoyed Europa League qualifications, Copa del Rey runs, and a strong showing in European play, establishing a period viewed as highly productive by supporters.

The arrival generated significant anticipation, and Marcelino’s return is not just about managing the team on match days. Unlike his two predecessors, he is expected to have a say in important sporting decisions, especially with the January market approaching. To this end, Fernando Roig Negueroles, the CEO of Villarreal, not only reached a financial agreement but also ensured that the coach would have influence over key decisions, reflecting a practical approach to rebuilding the squad.

The new Marcelino era begins with a clear mission: to reverse the season’s course and restore Villarreal’s standing in domestic and European competitions. The club’s leadership and supporters alike are hopeful that the blueprint drafted for the winter transfer window will translate into improved performances on the pitch.
