After a rough tumble at the hands of the pirate, an illusion grew among fans that the villain could be faced and adjusted before the season began.

While young players chased their debut dreams, the larger squad carried clear concerns. The defeat of Universidad de Chile at the hands of Coquimbo Unido in León marked Mauricio Pellegrino’s first televised friendly in 2023. It tangled ambitions in the Coquimbo Summer Cup and revealed some gaps that have kept the historic club flirting with relegation since 2019, regardless of the coaching changes.

Mauricio Pellegrino aims to change the reality at the U and to do so he is busy shaping the squad. The process is ongoing, with a second public friendly near at hand: Central Rosary, also on the coast of the fourth region. Goalkeeper Cristóbal Campos was back with the coaching staff, while Garrido continues his role between the posts.
