In Argentine football, there is hardly a pause between championships as the calendar moves from one major contest to the next.
The 2023 Professional League finished with River Plate dominating the scene. Martín Demichelis’s squad captured the title, yet most clubs are already turning their attention to the second half of the season that lies ahead.
Everything about the League Cup 2023
Just two weeks after the league campaign concluded, attention shifts to the League Cup 2023. It opens on August 20 and runs through December 16, the day of the final. The knockout rounds will be played from December 3 to December 10.
The competition will follow the format that has proven successful in recent editions: teams are split into two groups of 14. The top four from each group advance, then face off in a knockout phase. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final will determine the champion of the League Cup for 2023.
Also important to note is the relegation battle that will unfold in the latter part of the season. Initially, there were two direct relegation spots based on the season’s average, but a unanimous vote restructured the system, eliminating one direct relegation. As a result, at the end of the League Cup group stage, one team will drop based on the year-to-date table and another according to the average. This adds pressure for teams to perform consistently through both segments of the year. (Goal)
