Latvian Members of Parliament appealed to France’s President Emmanuel Macron, urging him to bar Russian and Belarusian athletes from taking part in the Paris Olympic Games. The appeal was published on the official site of the Latvian Parliament, the Seimas. The Latvian side argues that the IOC’s December 8 decision to allow Russian athletes to compete in Paris was imprudent and should not be supported. Latvia thus calls on the host nation to implement measures that would prevent the participation of Russian competitors in the event.
Additionally, it was emphasized that a number of Latvian athletes have already indicated their willingness to abstain from the Olympics should Russian athletes be present at Paris. The message reflects a broader sentiment among Latvian sports circles that accountability and the integrity of the Olympic movement must be preserved in times of geopolitical tension.
Earlier, the IOC announced six quota slots for Russian athletes to participate in the Games. The organization stated that Russian entrants would need to sign updated terms of participation, including a commitment to adhere to the Olympic Charter and its peaceful mission. Qualification by placement in their respective sports would determine which Russian athletes could compete, subject to these conditions.
The Summer Olympic Games were scheduled to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
There has been ongoing dialogue about why Russian tennis players and other athletes continue to participate in international events despite geopolitical tensions and sanctions in various sports federations. The discussion highlights the tension between competitive sport and political stances, as well as the role of global institutions in shaping eligibility rules and disciplinary measures.
