Kvitelashvili Ends Competitive Skating Career
Georgian figure skater Maurice Kvitelashvili has concluded his professional skating journey, according to a statement from the Georgian Figure Skating Federation. The athlete, who is 28 years old, has drawn a long line under a career that won him adoring fans and a place in Georgia’s skating history.
The federation noted that Kvitelashvili has chosen to retire from sport after a remarkable run. Born in Moscow, he spent his early years on the Russian national team, competing through the 2015/16 season. Following that period, he made a pivotal switch to represent Georgia on the world stage, a move that opened new chapters in his career.
Highlighting his achievements, Kvitelashvili earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2020. This breakthrough made him the first Georgian skater to reach the podium at the European level, a milestone celebrated by fans and national sports circles alike. In addition, he claimed a Grand Prix victory on the 2021 circuit held in Russia, underscoring his competitive caliber on the international stage.
During his peak competitive years, Kvitelashvili trained within a renowned group that also included coach Eteri Tutberidze, trainer Sergey Lipov, and Daniil Gleikhengauz. He also collaborated with Italian coach Lorenzo Magri in the previous season, contributing to his development and technique refinement. His European Championship finish placed him 16th at a time when the global field was exceptionally competitive, and his world championship placement stood at 20th, reflecting progress across major events.
In related news, reports from the Russian ice dance scene indicated that Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin earned silver medals in their national championship, while social media saw discussions about the possibility of a transition to the Georgian national team. These conversations mirror the ongoing evolution in regional figure skating as athletes explore new affiliations and opportunities within the sport’s landscape.
