Karpin on Russian Players, Europe, and Finances: A Candid View
Valery Karpin, head coach of Rostov and the Russian national team, explained that the financial aspect often keeps Russian footballers from moving to European clubs. He spoke with Sports24 to share his perspective.
According to Karpin, money drives many decisions. He estimated that about nine in ten players act primarily for financial reasons. He admitted that if a European club offered him the same salary as he earned at Spartak Moscow, he would probably stay put rather than pursue a move abroad.
What might surprise some is that athletes in Europe also weigh comfort and lifestyle. Karpin noted that if he were a star at Real Sociedad earning around one million euros, he might prefer to stay in his home country where he can be close to family and friends. The idea of traveling to England for the same money would not always be appealing, given the personal and professional tradeoffs involved.
He added that he does not fault players who choose to stay in Russia for financial reasons or to avoid a move to Europe. This viewpoint reflects a broader reality in modern football where financial and personal considerations shape career paths as much as sporting factors.
Rostov is currently 11th in the Russian Premier League standings after 18 rounds, having accumulated 21 points. The club’s plans for the season continue with Russian Cup fixtures in February. The 19th round of the league will resume on March 3, with Rostov set to face Krylya Sovetov Samara in their first league match after the winter break.
Earlier, Karpin discussed why his family chose to live in Estonia, a decision tied to personal and professional circumstances that influence where players and managers base themselves during demanding seasons.
