On Monday, May 22, it was confirmed that Juventus would receive a 10-point deduction in Serie A for the so-called capital gains case. The Vecchia Signora faced sanctions in the current campaign after a turbulent period that included the departure of former president Andrea Agnelli at the end of November 2022.

Initially, the penalty was handed down as a 15-point deduction in January. That sanction was appealed and suspended during the season, but it was ultimately reduced to ten points, altering Juventus’ standings in the 2022/23 Serie A table. The Federal Court of Appeals formalized the new penalty four months later.

The morning session opened with prosecutors requesting an 11-point penalty and an eight-month disqualification for several executives, including Pavel Nedved, Paolo Garimberti, Assia Grazioli-Venier, Caitlin Mary Hughes, Daniela Marilungo, Francesco Roncaglio, and Enrico Vellano. The hearing concluded around 12:50, with Juventus represented by lawyers Bellacosa, Sangiorgio, and Tortorella.

THE ROAD TO THE 23-24 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

With the deduction, Lazio and Napoli secured spots in the 2023/24 Champions League, while positions three and four remained unsettled among Inter, Milan, and Juventus. With only two matchdays left in the season, Juve faced a steep challenge to qualify, needing to win both remaining matches and count on Milan not winning, along with favorable results from Roma and Atalanta.

THE FIGC STATEMENT

According to the Collegio di Garanzia dello Sport, the Federal Court of Appeal renewed its assessment of Juventus’ sanction in the capital gains case and imposed a ten-point deduction for the present sports season. The court also cleared Pavel Nedved, Paolo Garimberti, Assia Grazioli Venier, Caitlin Mary Hughes, Daniela Marilungo, Francesco Roncaglio, and Enrico Vellano of the charges.

  • WHAT JUVE CAN DO NEXT

Juventus will await the detailed reasoning from the Federal Court of Appeal, which could arrive by the end of May, to determine whether an appeal to the CONI Warranty sign is viable. Once the reasons are published, Juventus can file an appeal within a few weeks.
