Izan Guevara Steps Up to Moto2 with GasGas Aspar Team

A Spanish rider, Izan Guevara, will step up to Moto2 next season with GasGas Aspar Team, continuing the ascent through the World Championship ladder up to the premier category in which the squad already competes at the sport’s highest level.

The GasGas Aspar Team confirmed on Wednesday that Guevara, the leader of the Moto3 World Championship, will complete the final rung of the ladder by entering Moto2 for the upcoming season. This move marks a pivotal transition as the young Spaniard takes on a new set of challenges in the middle category while the team aims to consolidate its position in the World Championship’s elite class.

Guevara arrives in Moto2 in his third season within the World Championship, bringing a resume that includes six race wins and eleven podium finishes so far. Ten of those podiums came during the 2022 season, where the rider demonstrated consistent performance across the calendar and reinforced his potential as a future MotoGP contender.

Jorge Martínez Aspar, the team manager, spoke about the decision to promote Guevara. He highlighted Guevara’s trajectory from winning the Moto3 Junior World Championship with the team to contending for the Moto3 title this year, all within his second full season in the World Championship. The management sees his adaptation and progress as unstoppable and believes that Moto2 will be a natural next step where he can build on his strengths and push for top results from the outset.

Guevara’s journey began in Mallorca, where he joined Team Aspar in 2020 after triumphing in the European Talent Cup. In his first year at the Junior World Championship, he claimed the title with five wins and eight podiums across eleven races. Some performances stood out as particularly memorable, such as a surge from 22nd on the grid at Aragón to secure victory—an emblematic showcase of his natural speed and racecraft.

He then advanced to the Moto3 World Championship in 2021. In his debut at Qatar, the young Spaniard delivered a seventh-place finish on a circuit that was unfamiliar to him. His results gradually improved, and he climbed to fourth in Great Britain and Aragon before securing his first win at the Americas track, a venue that presented its own unique challenges and rewarded his evolving skill set.

Reflecting on the upcoming transition, Guevara said that moving up to Moto2 at this moment feels right. He expressed confidence that joining forces with GasGas Aspar would be beneficial, noting the long-standing collaboration and shared journey since the Junior World Championships. He believes that together they can continue to achieve strong results and push for progression in Moto2 while maintaining the competitive spirit that characterized his Moto3 campaign.

For fans and followers of the World Championship, the announcement signals a season of anticipation as Guevara faces a new class with a different competition format, increased horsepower, and sharper field dynamics. The partnership with GasGas Aspar is expected to bring continued development support and a clear path toward sustained competitiveness in Moto2, with the objective of being consistently competitive in the standings and earning podium finishes in the mid-category as a stepping stone to even higher goals in the sport.
