El Rojo has endured six winless dates and, ahead of the clash with Sabalero, has also watched one of its most promising players depart for an extended period.

Independiente faces a tougher spell in the 2023 Professional League after opening with a victory on date one, then failing to add another win over the next six rounds. The run has left the coaching staff under scrutiny as the new cycle begins under a bright spotlight.

Following a 1-1 draw with Barracas Central on the last matchday, the Reds host Colón on the eighth date. The match will be staged at the Libertadores de América – Ricardo Bochini on Saturday, March 18 at 7:00 PM, a game that could shape Leandro Stillitano’s tenure moving forward.

THE CALLED INDEPENDENT

If the pressure from the current run wasn’t enough, Monday March 13 brought more bad news at Rojo’s training ground. Tomás Pozzo sustained a serious knee injury after a rough moment in a practice drill. At 22 years old, he is undergoing tests this afternoon, and medical staff are already leaning toward a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Avellaneda squad will be without one of its brightest young talents for at least half a year.

In the same fixture against Sabalero, captain Sergio Barreto will miss action due to suspension following a red card against Barracas. Those expected to be ready to start include Iván Marcone and Kevin López, who were rested against Guapo for physical reasons.

Edgar Elizalde remains sidelined, with only weeks left to recover from the arthroscopy he underwent in February after a meniscus injury against Vélez.

THE TRAINING OF INDEPENDENT

Stillitano understands the stakes in the Sabalero clash and will spend the week evaluating options to field the strongest possible lineup. The coach must decide who replaces Barreto after his dismissal, with Patricio Ostachuk looking to establish an early lead in that battle.

Meanwhile, Marcone is expected to reclaim his place in the starting eleven, and Kevin López could return after being held out against Barracas due to a minor muscle issue.

INDEPENDENT REPLACEMENTS

Segovia, Pérez, Da Rosa, Cazares, Pozzo, Barcia, González, Ortiz, Martínez, Hidalgo, Salle and Cauteruccio.
