Former confessor of hockey player Pavel Datsyuk was sentenced to seven years in prison. It has been reported by kp.ru.
On January 27, the Babushkinsky District Court of Moscow found the former spiritual guide Sergius guilty under the charge of incitement to hatred or hostility, as well as insult to human dignity, which is described in Article 282, part 2, paragraph B, of the Criminal Code of Russia. He received a sentence of five years and six months in a general regime penal colony. It is noted that, previously, in November 2021, he had already been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. This means that he will serve a total term of seven years in the colony, with three years and eleven months remaining on his earlier sentence.
The case centered on Sergius making negative statements about representatives of various faiths in videos published online.
Until 2020, Sergius served as the confessor at the Sredneuralsky Monastery. Among his spiritual wards was a former member of the Russian national hockey team, Pavel Datsyuk. Reports indicated that Datsyuk had also donated one of his gold medals to the monastery.
In 2021, Datsyuk addressed President Vladimir Putin with a request to review Sergius’s arrest.
There is also a note that claims Brett Hull once commented that Datsyuk in Detroit enjoyed humiliating his opponents.
