After a transition period, Liga MX required Fan ID for entry into Mexican soccer venues.

Following the incidents on matchday nine of the Closure 2022 between Queretaro and Atlas at the Corregidora Stadium, Mexican football faced a new dark chapter. In response, the league accelerated engagement with FIFA to authorize a program that would verify and register fans as a security measure: Fan ID.

The platform had been experimented with in Europe in prior years to improve crowd management and reduce the risk of serious incidents in stadiums worldwide. Liga MX President Michael Arriola announced on November 17, 2022 that the program would be adopted in Mexico, and this article provides the details.

WHAT IS FAN ID AND HOW DOES IT WORK

Fan ID has become a key identification document in Mexican football, required by security authorities at designated match venues. It should be carried at all times to enter and exit stadiums, and it offers several advantages for safety and attendance control.

In practical terms, it is an access card that exists in both printed and digital formats. Each person must present this card along with their match ticket to enter the venue. The system records the attendee in the authorities’ database to keep a log of fans present at the game.

Fan ID is set to roll out across all Liga MX stadiums starting with the Closure 2023 season. The rollout will occur in phases, first focusing on awareness and registration, then mandating participation in all matches of the season. The plan includes later implementation for the expansion and women’s leagues.

WHERE AND HOW TO GET IT

Entering Mexican football stadiums requires having Fan ID. The registration is free and covers a single season registration. The federation made a registration website available for fans to sign up.

To begin, fans can visit the registration site and follow a few simple steps to create an access profile:

  1. Visit the registration portal and sign up
  2. Take a selfie, scan the official ID, and activate the Fan ID
  3. Bring the QR code to the game and enjoy the experience

The registration asks for basic contact information and official IDs to verify identity, including mobile phone, email, and a current form of official identification such as INE, passport, or driving license.
