Everything you need to know about the Euro 2024 draw.

As Euro 2024 approaches in Germany, fans are turning their attention to how the tournament will be drawn and who their teams might face in the group stages. The competition will showcase Europe’s top national sides as they vie for a spot in the knockout rounds and a shot at glory on the continental stage.

Italy enter the tournament as the reigning champions after defeating England on penalties at Wembley in the summer of 2021. The calendar has seen back-to-back major events in recent years, with the 2020 European Championship delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Qatar World Cup moving to the calendar’s later months last year. The result has been a busy, densely packed football season for players and fans alike.

The next European Championship is close at hand, and the qualification campaign across Europe is drawing to a close. The best international teams are set to feature in the draw, sharing anticipation as the tournament nears the coveted kickoff in Germany.

This GOAL overview provides everything fans need to know about Euro 2024, including how to watch the draw, which teams have qualified, and what to expect when the pots are announced.

When is the European Championship 2024 draw, where to watch, and what time it starts

The full Euro 2024 draw was conducted to determine the group stage lineups and matchups for the tournament in Germany. The draw ceremony was held in December of the prior year at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, one of the host cities designated to stage matches throughout the event, including several group stage fixtures and a quarter-final showdown.

How the draw works

With Germany automatically qualifying as hosts, twenty more berths were awarded through the qualifying rounds, recognizing winners and runners-up across ten groups. The final three places for Euro 2024 were decided through a playoff path tied to the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League results. The playoff matches took place in March to whittle the field from twelve teams down to three qualifiers, ensuring a dramatic last-chance route for teams outside the initial qualifying route.

Teams earning entry are divided into four pots (1, 2, 3, 4) for the draw, based on their performance in the qualifying group stage. The host nation, Germany, is placed in pot one and assigned to Group A automatically, so they do not participate in the standard draw allocation.
