Villarreal’s coach Unai Emery took a stance similar to Elche’s coach, stating this morning that with the season already underway, it makes little sense for the transfer window to close. Speaking to the Efe news agency, Emery conveyed that market activity should not pause once league play has started, reflecting on the pattern seen in recent years and the disputes from the first three competitive matches of this season.
He also agreed with Elche’s coach Francisco Rodríguez that the window should have shut earlier. It is normal to feel frustrated. Emery noted he did not know who made the decision, but he believes it is a change that must happen.
Colombian defender Johan Mojica appeared on the transfer market slate on Thursday, joining Villarreal on the final day of movements, just four days before the two teams meet on the league’s fourth match of the weekend.
Emery stated that Mojica would not be used in the upcoming match and that no requests would be made to integrate him into the plans. The focus remains on the existing squad and the preparation for the contest rather than adjusting plans around the new arrival.
In response, the Basque coach described Elche as a highly hardworking side that deserves respect. He emphasized the need to present Villarreal’s best image from the outset and to strike a strong home tone after three away games. Emery expressed hope that the kind of support shown in the Conference League against Hadjuk Split would accompany the team in the league home debut.
The club confirmed Mojica’s arrival, following the departures of Ecuadorian Pervis Estupiñán and the injury setback for Alfonso Pedraza, highlighting the challenge of solidifying the lineup with limited market options.
Emery also highlighted his appreciation for Danjuma, praising the player’s contributions. He spoke about how the mix of youth and experience, with players like Yeremi, Baena, and Jackson, can strengthen the squad and complement the established veterans.
Juan Foyth noted that Kiko Femenía offered additional chances to grow the squad, even as the structure grew tougher. He added that the team considered a late-market option that ultimately did not materialize, explaining that the opportunity for a certain player did not come to fruition, leaving the plan adjusted accordingly.
