Douglas Santos, the Brazilian defender who represents Zenit Saint Petersburg, is in the process of obtaining Russian citizenship. A report circulating in sports media suggested that the procedure has entered a new phase recently, drawing attention from fans and analysts alike.

The process has stretched over several months. Zenit has already submitted a formal request to the Russian Football Union and prepared a positive reference for Santos. If he is granted the passport, he would be eligible to play for the Russian national team and would no longer be counted as a foreign player in the Russian Premier League.

Zenit already has another Brazilian with a Russian passport, Claudinho. Malcom also obtained Russian citizenship, but he moved away from Zenit to the Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Douglas Santos has been with Zenit since the summer of 2019 and signed a five-year contract after the transfer. In 2016, while playing for the Brazilian national team, the defender won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro.

Zenit has won the last six matches in the Russian Championship, including a 5-0 victory over Akron, and now sits at the top with 29 points. Krasnodar and Lokomotiv are next with 27 points, though they have not completed their 12th round matches yet. In the next round, Zenit will host Lokomotiv at home, with kickoff scheduled for October 27 at 19:30 Moscow time.

Earlier in the season Zenit matched the Russian Championship record, illustrating the club’s sustained success as the league continues to unfold.
