Diego Cocca led his first microcycle with the Mexican national team, assembling a squad primarily drawn from Liga MX.
Following a disappointing group-stage exit at Qatar 2022, the Mexican Football Federation faced a period of upheaval. The federation undertook a series of reforms and adjustments to the domestic league as it prepared for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The appointment of Diego Cocca as head coach for this World Cup cycle brought a fresh philosophy and strategic approach that influenced the Owners’ Committee in selecting him for a three-and-a-half-year project over other high-profile candidates such as Marcelo Bielsa, Guillermo Almada, and Michael Herrea.
Now the changes are visible on the ground. Cocca has been visiting multiple Mexican stadiums with his coaching staff, observing and taking notes on the players who will make up the national team during this cycle.
One of the proposed methods to maximize performance was for the team to spend as much time as possible with its players. The aim was to deepen mutual understanding and fine-tune the national team’s responsibilities throughout the process, a concept commonly referred to as microcycles.
Inside GOAL, the aim is to explain what microcycles are and how other coaches have employed this approach in their programs.
WHAT IS A MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM MICROCYCLE?
This approach is not new. Several strategists have used microcycles to extend contact with players and build trust. The objective is to increase the volume of training sessions and translate that consistency into results for the national team.
Participation is limited to players plying their trade in Liga MX and takes place during weeks when international duties or congested domestic calendars do not clash with match commitments.
OTHER COACHES WHO HAVE EMPLOYED MICROCYCLES
Richard Lavo and Javier Aguirre are among the tacticians who have integrated microcycles into their stints with the Tricolor. Lavo is noted for the extensive training blocks conducted ahead of Germany 2006, and his approach was later echoed during the South Africa 2010 cycle.
