The Brazilian transfer that includes a mandatory purchase option became official on December 25, marking a financial move for Atleti and a recalibration of its balance sheet.
Matheus Cunha’s exit from Atlético de Madrid is confirmed, as Goal reported in recent days. The Brazilian, who had stopped training with the group and was regarded as a starter, closed the departure details, with both clubs announcing the deal on December 25, 2022.
Transfer of Cunha from Atlético de Madrid to Wolverhampton: cost, contract length, earnings, and jersey number
Several English clubs vied to secure his signature, but the forward ultimately chose Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had agreed with Atlético de Madrid to execute the transfer and formally announced it at Christmas. The move includes a mandatory purchase obligation to be fulfilled by the Britsh club through 2027, with the operation valued at around 40 million euros.
The Wolves anticipate Cunha being available for their January 4 match against Aston Villa, a game that had added importance given the competition for his services.
As early as November 8, GOAL reported that Atlético would entertain offers for Cunha, driven by a dip in his goal output and a need to boost liquidity following a European setback. With the loan-to-permanent arrangement worth about 40 million euros, Atlético managed to stabilize its balance sheet and monetize Cunha, a player whom they paid 26 million euros for initially.
10% of Cunha’s future resale goes to Hertha
Atlético Madrid will not receive 100% of the transfer fee because Hertha Berlin had reserved a 10% stake in Cunha’s future resale when they transferred him to Atlético. This clause remains in effect as the deal with Wolves unfolds.
The official statement
“Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers on the transfer, with an option to buy, of Matheus Cunha.”
The Brazilian striker, who joined Atlético in the summer of 2021, played a total of 54 official matches for the rojiblancos, contributing 6 assists and scoring 7 goals. The club wished Cunha success as he embarks on this new professional phase, noting that the loan agreement hinges on completing final documentation for the player.”
