Colo Colo opened its title defense on January 22 with a win over newly promoted Deportes Copiapó at Luis Valenzuela Hermosilla stadium, signaling a strong start to the campaign.

The national league kicked off last Friday, January 20, with the 16 teams in the First Division aiming to lift the trophy as the 2024 National Championship unfolds. The local competition runs through December 10 and is played in two blocks of 15 rounds each, a format kept to deliver a balanced schedule across the season.

Standings are decided by the total points accumulated, with the tiebreaker for first place clarified by the league’s governance if needed. In the event of a tie at the top, the champion will be determined in a single deciding match on a date, venue, and kick-off time set by the ANFP Board of Directors in consultation with the Professional Leagues Management. The league winner earns the right to compete in the Super Cup against the Copa Chile winner from the same season.

Whichever team finishes first secures a spot in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores 2025. The second place team joins as Chile 2 in the continental competition, while the third placers land a berth in the qualifying rounds, mirroring the path open to the Copa Chile champion.

THE SCORERS TABLE

For the Copa Sudamericana, the teams finishing from fourth to seventh place move into the international contest landscape. At the season’s end, two clubs will be relegated for finishing in 15th and 16th positions. The club securing the Ascenso Championship title will ascend to the top flight, as Magallanes did following the previous season. A promotion playoff, or Liguilla, determines the remaining promoted team, featuring teams ranked between third and sixth, a format that kept Copiapó’s dramatic ascent alive after their victory over Cobreloa in the Desert Foxes derby. The Atacama region side makes its top-division debut, marking a historic milestone for the club.
