Colo Colo and Magallanes face off to settle the 2023 season, pitting the First Division champions against the Chile Cup winner in a duel that crowns the year’s most prestigious domestic fixture.
Colo Colo secured another trophy by defeating Catholic University in the 2022 Super Cup final. Now, at the official start of the 2023 season, Gustavo Quinteros and his squad aim to defend the title and claim a second consecutive championship against Magallanes at Sausalito Stadium.
It is worth recalling that in 2020 the student team had edged past Cacique to claim its third Super Cup, making Universidad de Chile one of the most successful clubs in this competition alongside Colo Colo, with wins in 2016, 2019, and 2020.
In 2021, as the league schedule was nearing its final stretch, Cristian Paulucci’s team defeated Colo Colo to become monarchs, securing their fourth triumph in this event. The 2022 edition, however, saw a different result as Magallanes fell 2-0 to Universidad Católica at Ester Roa Rebolledo, marking Colo Colo’s third Super Cup medal after 2017 and 2018.
Observers note that the debate over this clash between the First Division champion and the Chile Cup winner began to gain traction in 2013, when Unión Española defeated Universidad de Chile 2-0 to capture the trophy and set a precedent for the fixture.
