Chilean clubs eye group-stage glory in South American cups

Magallanes could not withstand the power of the DIM in Colombia and withdrew from the continental competition. They are competing in the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana.

Following a lengthy road through qualifying, Colo Colo (national champion), Ñublense (runner-up), Curicó Unido (third place) and Magallanes (Chile Cup champions) advanced to the 2023 Libertadores Cup, with the draw for the first two rounds held on December 21.

Colo Colo and the Red Devils have reached the group stage and are navigating a domestic campaign marked by upheaval as they prepare to challenge the continent at a high level of competition.

Those who were slower to advance were the Albirrojos and the Carabeleros, who had just earned promotion from Primera B and were drawn into very demanding ties: the Torteros were eliminated after a 2-0 aggregate defeat, while the Academy secured their place by beating Always Ready 3-0 in El Teniente and 1-3 at the Hernando Siles in La Paz.

The Carabeleros fell short in Phase 3 against DIM. In the first leg, the Albicelestes salvaged a narrow draw at El Teniente thanks to a late header from Yorman Zapata. In the return at the Atanasio Girardot, the Powerful were more efficient and claimed a 2-0 victory. As a result, Nicolás Nuñez’s side advances to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana.
