The team led by Ariel Holan aims to add another victory to maintain their position at the top of the National Championship standings.
Catholic University faces Spanish Union on Sunday in the eighth round of the 2023 National Championship.
Holan’s squad arrives buoyed by a 2-1 triumph over Ñublense in the Nelson Oyarzún Bicentennial match, a result that put the Crusaders four points clear at the summit. The win reinforced their already strong form and kept them in pole position to extend their winning streak in the domestic competition. Ronald Fuentes’ side, on the other hand, broke out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 victory over Deportes Copiapó at Santa Laura, marking their first win of the season and offering a hopeful sign for their campaign.
Across the First Division, both clubs have met 170 times. Catholic University has 69 wins, 288 total goals in those encounters, while Spanish Union holds 53 wins with 261 goals. There have been 48 draws. The latest clash occurred on October 19, with Catholic University prevailing 2-1 thanks to goals from Fernando Zampedri and Yamil Asad. Since a 3-2 home win in May 2021, the series has been difficult for Spanish Union, who have struggled to overcome their rivals in recent meetings.
