The eleventh edition of Castle Race gathered an impressive field, with 1,500 runners registered last year and an encouraging start this Monday during the test presentation at the Santa Bárbara castle. Early registrations already approach the thousand-mark, and the bulk of interest remains focused on the longer routes, specifically the 5,000 and 10,000 meter challenges. This momentum signals strong enthusiasm for a race that blends scenic routes with a demanding course, attracting both local competitors and visitors drawn to the city’s historic backdrop.
The race is scheduled for next Sunday, January 14, with both distances beginning on Foguerer José Romeu Zarandieta Street in front of the Rico Pérez stadium. The race day schedule opens at 9:00 a.m. for the 5-kilometer race and at 10:30 a.m. for the 10-kilometer event, with all finishers crossing the line at Joaquín Villar athletics track. Organizers emphasize a smooth, well-managed flow from start to finish, designed to minimize congestion while offering participants a memorable run through Alicante’s urban landscape and iconic sights.
Participants registered for the 5-kilometer route will begin their journey near the Santa Barbara Castle, tracing a course that winds through the historic city streets and returns to the finish line at the same spot. For the 10-kilometer path, runners will tackle the ascent of the San Fernando fortress as an initial challenge, then proceed toward the city’s other major fortifications before culminating across the finish line. The route pairing ensures a varied experience, combining urban precision with the dramatic elevation and historical landmarks that define Alicante’s character.
Speaking about the event, Toni Gallego, the Sports Counselor, described Castillo de los Castillos as a unique showcase within Spain due to the route’s distinctive terrain and demanding sections. He added that the race serves as a vivid example of how sports tourism can help smooth out the typical off-season, extending Alicante’s active offerings throughout the year and drawing visitors who seek authentic, outdoor experiences in a sunny coastal setting. Lucia Rodríguez, the race ambassador and Tokyo 2020 Olympian, shared at the presentation that the 5-kilometer race offers a rare chance to enjoy the city center on foot, without reliance on a car, turning participation into a true city-running experience. She also noted that this edition carries its own challenges and would-be participants will have to wait for a future opportunity to join the course in person, underscoring the event’s evolving nature and competitive spirit.
