Brazil-Russia Friendly Talks: Scheduling and Context

The Brazilian Football Confederation’s media relations team provided an update on talks with representatives from the Russian national team regarding a potential friendly between the two countries. The information was shared in a statement to Sports24.

Brazilian officials indicated that Russia is open to scheduling warm-up games for the Brazilian and Russian squads. However, they noted there is no available date in the coming year, as the calendar is already full. The current plan involves ongoing discussions about arranging a Brazil versus Russia friendly in the future, but not for 2024, according to the Brazilian side.

In 2022, the international football governing body and the European confederation moved to suspend the participation of Russia’s national team and all Russian clubs in events under their control. From that spring onward, Russian teams have been limited to friendly matches, under the new competitive framework imposed by FIFA and UEFA.

For 2022, Russian clubs besides Zenit did not compete in European club competitions. The national team, guided by head coach Valery Karpin, played five friendlies in 2023, reflecting the ongoing adjustment to the temporary restrictions and the new scheduling realities facing the squad.

Earlier reports indicated that another African nation had expressed interest in a match against the Russian national team, illustrating continued interest in cross-border friendlies despite the current competitive restrictions. As noted, these discussions are part of broader efforts to maintain international activity for both teams while respecting the present regulatory framework. Sports24 covered the trajectory of these talks, underscoring the cautious but ongoing efforts to secure a future fixture between Brazil and Russia that fits both programs’ calendars and competitive considerations.
