Rossi signing with Flamengo reshapes the goalkeeper plans for Boca Juniors. Who will be the starter in 2023?
Taking the helm for Boca Juniors is one of the most demanding roles in South American football. The club seeks calm, consistency, and the ability to perform under pressure in high-stakes matches. Experience is highly valued, and veterans who can stay composed in tense moments are regularly preferred to guard the blue and gold goal.
With the anticipated move of Augustine Rossi to Flamengo, all three Boca Juniors teams could see a change before the season kicks off.
In this feature we cover everything you need to know about the Boca Juniors goalkeepers.

After serving as a substitute for Manchester United over several seasons and making 34 appearances in his final three campaigns there, Romero moved to Venezia in Serie A as a starter. A knee surgery in March 2022 sidelined him for the rest of the season.
He joined Boca Juniors on a free transfer in August. He was set to debut in the Argentine Cup against Quilmes, but issues in the operated area delayed his first appearance. The 35-year-old veteran commands respect within the squad and holds a contract through the end of 2024. His form and fitness, however, are the main considerations for the club moving forward.
JAVIER GARCIA

Garcia returned to the club in August 2020 after nine years away, and in 2022 he extended his deal to December 31, 2024. A close confidant of Juan Román Román Roman, he is often described as a sure option for Boca’s lineup.
He is seen as the natural successor to Augustine Rossi. Last season he started in the Argentine Cup and was involved in the later stages of the League Cup and the season’s opening stretch due to Rossi’s injuries. When called upon to defend the Boquense goal, he delivered solid performances. Notable saves against Godoy Cruz and Central Córdoba are remembered as turning points in Sebastián Battaglia’s era.
LEANDRO BREY
Breay is the youngest keeper in the squad. At 20 years old, he joined Boca in February 2022 from Los Andes. He shone with his club Booking, contributing to a title-winning campaign and delivering impressive saves.
Breay has limited top-flight experience, featuring only 45 minutes in the Copa Libertadores against Always Ready, stepping in for Rossi who was dealing with muscle pain. He is regarded as one of the youth prospects to rise, with a contract through the end of 2025. The club hopes he will grow into Boca’s new first choice in time.

Rossi has already sealed a transfer to Flamengo, yet he remains under contract with Boca until June 30, 2023. Until that date the club expects him to fulfill his duties and protect the blue and yellow goal throughout the semester. Flamengo reportedly sought financial compensation to accelerate the move, but those discussions did not materialize.
The vocational logic suggests Rossi will not be in Boca’s first-team plans immediately, though nothing is confirmed until the transfer window closes.
