With the idea of glory fueling them and Juan Román Riquelme as a symbol, Boca Juniors aimed to win every title in 2022. A primary target was the 2022 Professional League Cup, where they were placed in Zone B alongside Independiente, Estudiantes, Vélez, Rosario Central, and others.
That last edition, which Colón eventually captured, left Boca with mixed memories. They eliminated River Plate on penalties in the quarterfinals but then fell to Racing in the semifinal at the Bicentennial Stadium in San Juan.
Yet the bitterness of finishing fourth in the domestic league while watching their lifelong rival win inspired Boca to chase the championship. To strengthen the squad, three key additions were brought in: Dario Benedetto, Pol Fernandez, and Nicolas Figal.
Under the guidance of Sebastián Battaglia, who extended his tenure for another year, the team opened on February 13 with a draw against Colón in La Bombonera and then secured a 2-1 victory over Aldosivi in Mar del Plata just three days later. The following Sunday, they beat Rosario Central 2-1 in Liniers, then drew 2-2 with Independiente at the Libertadores de América and, on the fifth matchday, lost their first home game of the season to Huracán. In the seventh round, they defeated River Plate in the clásico and surged to the top of Zone B. After a FIFA international break, they played Arsenal to a 2-2 draw in La Bombonera, then drew with Vélez in Liniers and shared points with Lanús and Godoy Cruz. They beat Central Córdoba 2-1 in Santiago del Estero and sealed a quarterfinal berth with a 2-0 win over Barracas Central in La Bombonera. The regular phase was set to conclude on Saturday, May 7, with a match against Tigre in Victoria.
Finishing second left Boca with no realistic chance of being overtaken, they would face the quarterfinals on May 11 in La Bombonera in a single-elimination format. The semifinals and final would take place on May 15 and May 22 at a neutral venue.
