Benidorm strengthens its squad ahead of European competition

Before the next season begins, the handball team is set to compete in European events with renewed ambition. The squad, led by coach Fernando Latorre, announces the renewal of key defences and welcomes new signings including Rubén Santos, the Lithuanian defender Rolandas Bernatonis, and center Iker Serrano.

The latest addition is Rubén Filipe Matos Santos, a Portuguese defender from Vitória Setúbal FC who signed a two season contract. The 23 year old is among the Portuguese League’s top scorers with 182 goals in 28 matches. His on court leadership and game vision are highlighted as important strengths for the team, alongside his goal scoring prowess.

Rubén Santos came through the youth ranks of FC Porto and has played for clubs such as Aguas Santas and Póvoa AC prior to his spell with Vitória FC.

Pivot Iker Serrano

Internationally, the new Benidorm player has been part of numerous championships with the Portuguese junior national team. He also made the step up from the roster of Nacho Valles to the main squad, marking a significant moment in his career.

Coach Fernando Latorre described the new signing as a defender with remarkable experience for his age, noting that he appears seasoned beyond his years on the court.

The Alicante coach commented that Santos possesses strong decision making and a sharp understanding of the game. There is confidence that he will deliver much for the club in the coming season. The player himself spoke of being extremely happy with the career move and promised to give his all in every match.

After meeting with the coach, Santos stated that there are big and promising goals for the next season. He believes he has joined the right environment to work with the right people and continue his growth as a player. He added that Benidorm is the place where he needed to be.

Rolandas Bernatonis

Certain days earlier, the seasoned Lithuanian defender Rolandas Bernatonis joined the squad. With extensive experience and knowledge of the Asobal League, he brings a long track record from Spain and Hungary. In Spain he previously played for CD Bidasoa, Helvetia Anaitasuna and Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto, later moving to CSM Bucuresti and eventually returning to the league with a different club. The move marks another step in the club’s strategic build for the current season.

On his part, Iker Serrano will remain with the club for another season. His experience and reliability have made him one of the standout reinforcements, evidenced by his scoring rate across competitions. In the 29 games he played last season he netted 93 goals, averaging over three per match.

Iker expressed his happiness at remaining with the group, describing it as a family and highlighting the big challenges ahead, including a strong presence in European competitions.

Speaking about the upcoming campaign, Santos conveyed his enthusiasm for the project: the team has strong prospects and a clear plan to compete at high levels. He felt Benidorm was the right place to continue his development and contribute to the club’s goals.
