THE ARGENTINE NOMINEES FOR THE BALLON D’OR

LIONEL MESSI

He is viewed as a top candidate after his stellar showing at the 2022 World Cup. A Ballon d’Or win would be the eighth of his illustrious career, a milestone unmatched by any other Argentinian. Messi has previously claimed the award in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2021.

EMILIANO MARTINEZ

The custodian has earned a spot among the best, competing for the Yashin Trophy for the world’s best goalkeeper while also improving as a field player. Spectacular saves against foes like Mexico, Australia, the Netherlands, and France, along with clutch penalties for Aston Villa, bolster his case for recognition.

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ

The Spider enjoyed a dream season after joining Manchester City, helping secure the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup. His role with Argentina in Qatar 2022 also stands out. Álvarez became the first Argentine to capture the core quartet of titles: the World Cup, the Copa América, the Copa Libertadores, and the Champions League.

LAUTARO MARTÍNEZ

While Lionel Scaloni’s cycle features him as a key scorer, Lautaro arrived in Qatar with pressure on his shoulders. He faced tough moments but delivered moments of brilliance against the Netherlands and France. His performances for Inter, including a mature, powerful presence and several goals in Italy, helped keep him in contention for this honor.

HOW TO VOTE

Voting is handled by 180 football journalists worldwide. They first select five players from the 30 nominees. Then they assign points: six for first place, four for second, three for third, two for fourth, and one for fifth. The totals determine the final podium, which includes the three top-voted players.
