Audax Italiano beat Universidad Católica 3-2 to reach the group stage of the continental tournament for the first time in its history.

The 2023 Copa Sudamericana renewed the prospect of travel across the continent for Chile’s representatives: Palestino, Cobresal, Universidad Católica and Audax Italiano, each eyeing a breakthrough on the international stage.

Conmebol confirmed a one-match first phase, with a draw not settling the result. If tied after regulation, penalties would decide the winner who advances to the groups; the loser would exit the continental competition as March begins. Chilean clubs objected, aware that a loss means not only a spot in the draw but the associated revenue. Yet the format persisted after authorities announced the decision two days after the draw took place.

In the first leg, Audax Italiano overcame a deficit to overcome Universidad Católica 3-2 and secure a spot in the group stage for the first time. Cobresal and Palestino were set to determine the second group qualification this Thursday at El Teniente stadium.
