HE AtticGo Handball Club Elche faced a narrow setback on the road last Saturday, losing 26-25. Yet the result did not diminish what has been the best first round in the history of Spanish women’s handball in its top division.
Joaquín Rocamora’s squad reaches the halfway point of the season with strong momentum. They sit in second place with 18 points after nine wins and two draws. Only the reigning favorite, Super Amara Bera Bera from San Sebastián, holds more points with 19. Costa del Sol Málaga shares third place on 18 points, while Aula Valladolid sits in fourth with 17. The fifth spot is a bit more distant with 12 points, but the race remains open and competitive as the season progresses.
AtticGo Elche gave up the lead in Galicia (26-25)
According to the club’s press office, the first women’s team achieved one of the best goal percentages in recent history within the top tier. After eleven league games, the squad has secured nine wins and two losses, averaging 81.81 percent of available points per game, or 1.63 points per match. This marks a new high above the 80.76 percent (1.61 points per game) recorded in the 2012-2013 season. Through eleven rounds in the current campaign, the Franjiverde team has accumulated 21 points, and the league format that season included fourteen teams and two more matches than this year. The organization notes that campaign structure allowed for a higher total score, contributing to a historic early milestone for the club.
Since joining the 2023-2024 season, AtticGo BM Elche has recorded 18 points across eleven matches, a tally equal to several past campaigns in the club’s history, including 2018-2019, 2014-2015, 2011-2012, and 2008-2009. In those seasons the team played two more matches, which affects direct point-per-game comparisons. Current math shows a rate of 69.23 percent overall, equating to about 1.38 points per game, still well below the 81.81 percent mark reached this season. The club’s official notes emphasize the exceptional pace and competitive level achieved in the current campaign.
Elche’s performance in the 2020-2021 campaign featured an 85.71 percent points contribution, yet the format of that season in the Guerreras Iberdrola League split teams into two groups. The Franjiverde squad accumulated twelve points in seven matches, including six wins and one loss. However, direct comparisons remain imperfect due to differing season structures and the fact that this season has four fewer games played so far, which inflates the current per-game rate and overall score comparisons.
Rocamora: “Bera Bera is no longer an insurmountable giant for AtticGo Elche”
Next match is scheduled for December 22. The Women’s Honors Division now faces a test as national team commitments pause the league due to the World Cup dispute, and several Franjiverde players will link up with the national squad during the break. Coach Joaquín Rocamora has also departed from his role with the Spanish youth national team, focusing on club duties as the schedule resumes.
The next AtticGo Elche match will be played on December 22, when the Elche team travels to face Costa del Sol Malaga, who currently sit in third place on the table.
The team has three days off this week.
