Atlético Nacional resumed training at the high-performance complex in Guarne, onboarding four new players as part of the squad’s latest refresh.

The club began its 2023 season with a return to work, gathering on Tuesday, January 3 at the Guarne facility for the first rounds of medical tests and fitness evaluations ahead of a demanding preseason schedule.

While the squad awaits a fifth reinforcement to bolster the wide attacking options, head coach Paulo Autuori has the group in eastern Antioquia focused on early assessments and conditioning as they prepare for a tight January agenda.

The club, nicknamed the King of Cups, is set to play several friendlies before its league opener on January 25. One notable test will be against Alianza Lima on January 14 at Atanasio Girardot, where the men’s and women’s teams will also be officially presented.

The squad’s pre-season plan is designed to build momentum ahead of the Colombian league debut in the first half of 2023.

SQUAD, REINFORCEMENTS AND INJURIES

Thirty-two players were present at the High Performance Center to begin duties under the guidance of the staff, including new signings Francisco Da Costa, Juan Felipe Aguirre, Cristian Zapata and Sergio Mosquera.

Departures included Daniel Mantilla, Alexander Mejía, Andrés Andrade, Emanuel Olivera, Sebastián Guerra and Yeison Guzmán, with potential exits for Aldair Quintana and Geisson Perea anticipated in the near future.

Other players such as Yéiler Góez, Juan Pablo Ramírez, Cristian Blanco and Brayan Rovira are awaiting word on their contract status.

Injury updates show Sebastián Gómez and Álvaro Angulo still in the medical ward. Gómez has been rehabilitating and aims to participate fully in preseason activities, while Angulo faces a lengthier recovery before returning to competition. Jhon Duque integrated with the group this Thursday and should be available for standard training sessions. The remainder of the squad mirrors the group that participated in the BetPlay League’s second half of 2022.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Only one confirmed friendly is on record: Atlético Nacional will face Alianza Lima of Peru on Saturday, January 14 at 4:30 p.m. local time at Atanasio Girardot, as part of La Noche Verdolaga.

Fans should note there has been no official broadcast arrangement announced for this match.

Additional friendlies are expected to be announced in the coming days.

WHERE WILL THE PRE-SEASON BE HELD?

For the second consecutive year, Atlético Nacional will base its entire preseason on Antioquia territory.

The compact schedule and local league start make participation abroad unfeasible, despite an initial invitation to Alianza Lima’s Blue and White Night event.
