The Argentine striker is set to seize every opportunity in a Manchester City shirt, proving he should not be confined to the wings of the squad for long.
With the notable exception of Erling Haaland, Alvarez posts the best goals-per-minute ratio within City’s ranks. In fact, Haaland stands as the only City player with more than ten Premier League starts who has a higher scoring rate across all competitions than the Argentine forward.
Yet Alvarez sits as City’s second-most efficient scorer by minutes, ranking 16th in total minutes among the Premier League side after starting only eight of City’s 32 most recent matches. His total minutes in the league trail those of Joao Cancelo, who has not been with City since January after his loan to Bayern Munich began.
In his inaugural European season, Alvarez has demonstrated exceptional productivity and harmonizes seamlessly with Pep Guardiola’s tactical approach. Despite this high-level output and an extraordinary work rate, he has frequently found himself on the substitutes’ bench.
For a player of such caliber, entering his prime at 23 and fresh off a World Cup triumph, there is a strong case for him to feature far more regularly this season.
Following his standout performance against Fulham, it seems warranted that he should earn a start against West Ham on Wednesday.
