From September 30 to October 2, the Alicante Technical Center and Rafa Pastor pavilion will host a premier Women’s Basketball Tournament organized by the Ministry of Sports, with leadership from City Councilor Jose Luis Berenguer (Cs). The event is a collaborative effort with the “JUST WOMAN” association and the Cabo Mar Women’s Basketball Club, drawing more than 200 players from across Spain. The tournament welcomes female athletes from child, student, junior, and senior categories to compete in a friendly, non-professional setting that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and fair play.
The competition schedule starts Friday, September 30, with matches running through Saturday from 09:00 to 20:00, and Sunday from 09:00 to 14:30, culminating in the awarding of cups and prizes. Spectators and families will have ample time to enjoy the lively atmosphere and cheer on their favorite teams as the event unfolds.
The tournament features two distinct formats to accommodate players at different levels. Younger and student teams will participate in traditional 5-on-5 basketball, while the top-tier squads will compete in the 3-on-3 format, reflecting the Olympic program showcased at Tokyo 2021. This structure provides a platform where emerging talents can showcase their skills side-by-side with seasoned players, all within a supportive, community-driven setting.
The purpose of the event goes beyond competition. It aims to bring together players from non-professional circles, offering a welcoming space for young athletes to enjoy the game alongside peers from all across Spain. By focusing on participation and development, the tournament helps foster a lifelong love for basketball and encourages healthy habits among participants and their families.
In line with European Week of Sport, the Department of Sport, in collaboration with the Mobility and Traffic departments, continues to promote sport as a powerful tool against obesity and sedentary living. After two years of reduced physical activity, the campaign emphasizes regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and an active lifestyle as pillars of lasting health. The initiative is supported by the European Commission and the Supreme Sports Council in Spain, and it will act as a hub for sport-related activities at the event, including basketball courts and a range of recreational activities.
Participation remains free and open to everyone, regardless of age or physical condition. This inclusive approach ensures that local residents, visitors, families, and tourists alike can engage with the event, try new sports opportunities, and enjoy the energetic environment surrounding a major basketball gathering. The city of Alicante, with its unique ambiance and abundant leisure offerings, provides an ideal backdrop for players and their families to experience a memorable tournament, explore the city, and share in the joy of sport.
